Trained in classical ballet, Cuban conceptual artist Glenda Leon creates video, installation, public interventions, and photography that examine the relationship between the man-made and the natural, often highlighting the folly of human timekeeping. As Leon has said, “it takes a whole lifetime to create an artwork.” Her work Wasted Time consists of a mountain of sand that has engulfed an hourglass, and in the summer of 2004, the artist glued fake green leaves to tree branches in a public park for her work Esperanza (Out of Season). When the seasons changed, the surrounding leaves turned brown and fell to the ground, only then revealing their artificial counterparts.
